Fitness to Train to TeachÌý

All universities must ensure that entrants have met the Secretary of State’s requirements for physical and mental fitness to train toÌý teach. Newman takes great care to ensure that whilst all candidates meet the requirements for entry to initial teacher education it does not discriminate against disabled candidates, in either the selection procedures, requirements for progression and completion of training, or provision of services.

Teaching is a demanding career and teachers have a duty of care towards the pupils in their charge. The health, education, safety and welfare of pupils must be taken into account when deciding on an individual’s fitness to train to teach. There are a number of factors taken into account when deciding whether a candidate meets the requirements for fitness to train to teach. Many disabled people or people with chronic illnesses may be able to teach with reasonable adjustment, just as non-disabled candidates or those without medical conditions may be unsuitable to teach.
